I'm Certified, But Not In Michigan
Michigan has signed an Interstate Compact Agreement (ICA) with every state agreeing to accept out-of-state teacher preparation programs and teaching certificates on a reciprocal basis for initial certification. However, the terms of the agreement address both traditional teacher preparation programs and alternative route teacher certification programs and each certificate and/or program must be evaluated under the terms of this agreement.
I'm Not Certified in Any State
We are excited you are interested in becoming a Michigan teacher! In Michigan, teacher preparation is guided by statute (otherwise known as state law), state administrative rules, and teacher preparation program standards.
I'm Certified in Michigan, But Need to Renew My Certificate
Michigan allows for a five-year teaching certificate with unlimited renewals. Each renewal adds five years to the certificate’s validity. This also applies to CTE, School Counselor, and Administrator certificates.
Recent changes to Michigan’s Code of Education Ethics, Test for Teacher Certification and teacher certification structure are helping the education workforce better align with new preparation standards.
